Buckle Up

So President Bush has nominated White House Council Harriet Miers to fill Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s vacancy. So far, there isn’t a whole lot to write about her since she hasn’t been a judge and therefore little is known of her views. For now though, I will be optimistic. The New York Times says she has been a long-time confidant of President Bush – so if she is a friend of his from his more moderate days in Texas, maybe she is more moderate too.

My gut feeling though is that if more doesn’t come out about her views, Democrats will be forced to put up a big fight. They will grill her during the Committee hearings, and when she avoids specifics on how she is likely to rule (like any judicial candidate should), the interest groups on the left will put extreme pressure on Democratic Senators to stall and maybe even filibuster. I fear a long, drawn-out battle is inevitable.
